Semiconductor Marketing Strategy: How to Influence the Design-In Before the RFQ
A semiconductor purchase is often an engineering decision before it is a procurement event
The decisive moment can occur when an engineer selects an architecture, narrows a component family, evaluates a reference design, or commits to a device during development. By the time an RFQ reaches procurement, much of the technical preference may already be established.
That changes the role of marketing. Category awareness still matters, but the program also has to make the product easy to discover, understand, evaluate, and defend inside the customer’s organization.
Organize content around the design workflow
Engineers need different information as they move from problem definition to part selection. Early content can frame application challenges and architecture choices. Evaluation content should provide datasheets, application notes, design guides, simulation data, reference designs, evaluation-board information, and comparison logic. Later content should support qualification, availability, lifecycle, and supply questions.
The best content architecture mirrors the decisions the engineer is making instead of organizing everything around the supplier’s product taxonomy.
Technical specificity is a commercial advantage
RHBlake’s manufacturing buyer research found roughly one-third of buyers see insufficient technical specificity or differentiation in supplier information. Semiconductor buyers are unlikely to reward vague language about performance and innovation. They need parameters, conditions, tradeoffs, application context, and enough detail to decide whether a device deserves bench time.
Marketing should work closely with product and application engineering to turn technical knowledge into useful search and evaluation content without stripping out the nuance that gives it credibility.
Design-in confidence includes supply and lifecycle confidence
Performance is only part of the decision. Buyers may also evaluate qualification, packaging, compliance, availability, longevity, second-source risk, change notification, manufacturing geography, and support. In automotive, industrial, medical, aerospace, and other long-lifecycle markets, those issues can determine whether a technically attractive part is viable.
Content and sales tools should surface the evidence before those concerns become late-stage objections.
Use thought leadership to shape application demand
Strong semiconductor thought leadership can help engineers and product leaders understand an emerging architecture, power challenge, sensing problem, connectivity requirement, or edge-compute tradeoff before they begin comparing devices. RHBlake’s thought-leadership study found 90% of manufacturing buyers say strong thought leadership affects trust, which makes upstream technical education commercially relevant.
The best pieces leave the reader with a better way to think about the engineering problem. Once that happens, product relevance is easier to establish without forcing the product into every paragraph.
That same discipline applies before an RFQ. The clearer the application fit, technical advantage, supporting evidence, and lifecycle story are during engineering research, the more likely a supplier is to enter the design discussion before procurement formalizes the choice.
RHBlake’s work with onsemi provides a direct example. In its published silicon-carbide case study, RHBlake used voice-of-customer research and market analysis to help sharpen onsemi‘s SiC market presence, then carried the positioning into messaging and technical marketing assets. The work addressed a familiar semiconductor problem: engineering capability can be real and differentiated while the market still lacks a simple, credible reason to prefer it.
onsemi shows what semiconductor positioning looks like in practice
What this looks like in practice
A design engineer may discover a device through an application problem, not a part number. The supplier that explains the architecture, shows where the component fits, makes evaluation practical, and gives the engineer something defensible to take into a design review can influence the decision well before sourcing gets involved.
Semiconductor marketing earns influence when it makes the engineering decision easier. A supplier that helps the buyer understand the application, evaluate tradeoffs, and reduce design risk can shape the design before procurement ever opens an RFQ.
